A. History of Cycling
1. Historical Evolution
In 1903, Japanese Occupation, bicycles saluted into Taiwan form Japan. In that time, bicycles had to cost 30 dollars which correspond to noble Benz in nowadays. Therefore, only Japanese and the rich in Taiwan could buy bicycles. In 1940s, some bicycles which produced from Japan were imported in Taiwan. Some people such as formers and businessmen began to ride bicycles to move goods or to substitute walking. After restoration of Taiwan, people in Taiwan began to produce bicycles. Nevertheless, the technique in Taiwan was not better than Japan, so the prize was cheaper than Japan. In addition, the government fostered the domestic industry of bike so that they prohibited the import of bicycles. With the government protection in 1950s, the cheap bikes became civilian, general and daily transportation. However, in 1968, the 50c.c motorcycles import in Taiwan from Japan. When more and more people ride motorcycles, the air pollution is becoming worse and worse. In so doing, we substituted motorcycles for bicycles. Besides, the concept of bicycles turns into an activity which was called cycling.
The following are some examples for cycling. In 1984, a man named Hu Jung-hua started his plans which travel around the world by bicycle. His plans always take years to accomplish. He kept journals that recorded what happened in the trip and how his feeling was. Besides, did you remember the movie called “Island Etude” in April, 2007? The movie described a man who needed hearing aids to communicate with the people, carrying broken guitar string, and starting from Kaohsiung to counterclockwise around the Taiwan. Because of Hu Jung-hua and the movie hitting the boxes, cycling seemed to become more and more popular. Then, people stared to go cycling. Nowadays, the population of cycling is gradually increasing. Hence, cycling makes people lead a different life in the world.
2. Meanings of Cycling
In early times, bicycles were transportation for people. People went to other places by riding bicycles. Besides, people moved their possession by bicycles. Now, riding bicycles is kind of activity called cycling. Cycling is an action which people can travel around the island and take a long-distance trip. More and more people enjoy the cycling because it can make people relaxed, vigorous, and energetic. People reduce their pressure and comfort their uptight feeling by cycling. For example, a cycler, Peter van der Lans, considered cycling could encounter different counties people, go to see beautiful please, and go through life experience. Another example, Jason Chah Jien Shen, considered cycling was a challenge. He wanted to break Japanese records and achieved his goal. He also considered cycling could pursue the youth.
